New York Promise Scholarship Covers 100% of Tuition for Eligible Students Statewide
BUFFALO, NY, UNITED STATES, November 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Eligible students across New York State can attend Canisius University in Buffalo, NY, without paying tuition out of pocket through the newly launched New York Promise Scholarship. The initiative covers 100% of undergraduate tuition for up to four years for first-year students beginning in fall 2027.
Who Qualifies for the New York Promise Scholarship
The scholarship covers whatever tuition remains after federal, state, and institutional financial aid are applied. To be eligible, students must:
- Be a New York State resident admitted as a first-year undergraduate.
- Have a household adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less.
- Complete both the FAFSA and New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application.
The New York Promise Scholarship is renewable for up to four years, provided recipients remain in good academic standing.
How the Buffalo Promise Scholarship Led to a Statewide Program
The statewide scholarship builds on the momentum of the Buffalo Promise Scholarship, which Canisius University introduced in fall 2025 to expand college access for eligible students in Buffalo’s 142-ZIP code area. According to the university, the initiative drew more than 1,000 applicants in each of its first two years. It is also reaching more first-generation college students, who made up 53% of fall 2026 recipients, up from 39% the year before. The first two groups of recipients account for more than $40 million in four-year tuition support.
“The success of the Buffalo Promise Scholarship has shown that when barriers are removed, students are empowered to realize their full potential,” said Steve Stoute, president of Canisius University. “Through the New York Promise Scholarship, we are helping ensure that the future of New York State students is defined by their promise and purpose, not by their financial circumstances.”
Canisius Programs That Support Student Success and On-Time Graduation
The New York Promise Scholarship is the latest in Canisius University’s broader commitment to student success. In recent years, the university has invested in programs designed to enhance access, strengthen support, and improve outcomes. These efforts include Canisius Computes, which provides every incoming first-year student with a MacBook Air; Canisius Complete, which ensures students have access to required course materials from the first day of classes; the Golisano Center for Student Success, a centralized hub for advising, career development, and student support services; and the Golden Griffin Guarantee, which helps eligible students stay on track to graduate on time.
Families can find full eligibility details and the New York Promise Scholarship application on the Canisius University website.
